Swimmer Development Model

Posted on 13-Mar-07 14:26 (Weekly News)

Over the past weeks we have had an increasing number of swimmers fail to make their sessions for one reason or another.  The session requirements that Neons has in place for its senior level squads are not unrealistic.  Below is an abbreviated version of Swimming Australia's Swimmer Development Model for pool training; which shows that our coaches' expectations of their swimmers are more than reasonable.

Girls 12yrs Boys 13yrs (±1yr)

14yrs (±2yrs)

Session duration

40mins-1 hr

With many of the top clubs in Victoria following this model to the letter, the standard of swimming in Victoria has improved dramatically over the past five years.  Swimmers who are not meeting these criteria cannot expect to remain competitive throughout their later teenage years as much of the aerobic background, which is integral to swimmers' development, is developed during these early years by putting in the required number of pool sessions.

Over the coming weeks and months our coaches will be sitting down with the various squads and their parents, to discuss how swimmer development and training should progress and what is expected of each squad.  Ivanhoe Neons' goal is to become among the top five clubs in Victoria.  Results such as this are only achievable through striving towards swimming elitism in all squads from a young age.
